Equine DNA Testing Service

NEWS!
CHANGES TO EQUINE TESTING SERVICES

Effective June 1, 2009, PDSAz has discontinued DNA testing of horses
(except the test for seal brown At).
Services which involve DNA testing of donkeys will remain unchanged.
Express Testing Services have also been discontinued.

Due to advances in the DNA technology during the last two decades, and with the recent identification of some genes and mutations causing differences in hair color or underlying certain disorders in horses, DNA testing has become the method of choice, providing invaluable information for horse owners and breeders.

Based on recent estimates, there are about 44 million domestic donkeys in the world, and about 55 thousand of them are being kept in the USA. Worldwide, the vast majority of donkeys are kept for work, but in the USA and parts of the European Union they are mainly kept for recreation, breeding, showing, and companionship as pets. Besides differences in size (miniature, standard, and Mammoth), there are various coat colors in these animals, including grey-dun, brown, black, and sorrel. Furthermore, there are also various white patterns including roan and spotting. In collaboration with the American Donkey and Mule Association (ADMS) we have been pursuing studies of genes contributing to coat color differences (this project is also referred to as the Donkey Genome Color Project). This study has been very productive, and so far we have discovered gene mutations responsible for the sorrel color, and for the No Light Point (NLP) recessive trait. PDSAz developed DNA tests for these traits and we are now offering them to the public.

Because practically all cells in the body of the same individual contain identical DNA, and the laboratory tests are extremely sensitive, any easily obtainable "live" material is useful as a source for DNA testing. The material of choice in equine testing is pulled hair from the mane or tail, and must contain intact root bulbs (follicles), which are the source of DNA. (Please note: a young foal's mane hair is typically too fine, so the coarser tail hair should be used).

Note: All molecular genetics studies are supported from our internal budget and donations. Please inquire if you would like to contribute, thank you.
